A Reluctant Fan of Blogging

I recently took a class through Coursera, an online learning platform.  The class was entitled The Strategy of Content Marketing.   To my consternation, it was very focused on blogging.  Not what I expected.

As the French would say: “Quelle horreur!”

Here I will confess that I have had a general approach-avoidance conflict regarding blogs.  Well, perhaps the confession is not necessary given the preceding comment.

I’ve read some great blogs.  But on the other hand, I’ve quickly clicked away to mental and emotional safety from some others. Badly written, self-aggrandizing blogs are the horror of many.  Right?!

However, I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot!  I have now become a reluctant fan of blogging.

I particularly enjoyed the teacher, Sonia Simone, and her perspective on content marketing in connection with blogging.  Her wry wit and focus on being authentic really spoke to me.  Her admonition “Don’t lie, don’t lie, don’t lie” resonated with me.  As did her focus on writing with honest authority, supported by thorough research.

In her post The real difference between scuzzy and cool copywriting, she wrote:

“For the same kind of product or service, one company will create copy that makes me want to run a million miles away.  And another company writes something that makes me fling myself at them with unseemly abandon.”

Sonia Simone, Remarkable Communication

I really want to make people fling themselves with unseemly abandon at art and art history.  To be fascinated with the work of other artists, past and present.  To be intrigued by composition. To desire to roll in delicious color.

Figuratively of course.  Rolling in paint can be quite messy.  And all the parents out there would be understandably annoyed with me for encouraging their children to literally roll in color.  Although, many those children would enjoy it, I think.

I love teaching and sharing my love of color, composition, art history, et cetera.  What a lovely moment when you see the student’s eyes light up!

So, I have decided I’m going to take what I learned from The Strategy of Content Marketing to actually write a blog <gasp!> about something I love to share.

Next time, something about some basics of color theory.  If color theory is new to you, this is a foundation piece that will give you that lightbulb moment, that “Ahah!” moment, the next time you go to mix colors for painting.

Regards,

Lori
